FINAL REFLECTION

Here I take the time to reflect on this process, including my infographic revision choices and website design.

Final Reflection: Project

Revision Choices

Full details of my infographic revision choices can be found on their pages.

As a general overview, however, I tried to approach every revision decision with our design principles in mind. Mostly, reduced realism, Gestalt Principles such as Uniform Connectedness, and all of the CRAP design principles. I also took into account common visual design techniques and typography principles.

Although certainly not a requirement, links to video tutorials would have been an added bonus in my infographics. Specifically, my simple infographic: "Tinikling". However, I chose to forgo the video links due to time constraints. The problem was not in adding a link to the infographic, but in finding the most appropriate tutorial.

I also chose not to add the original versions of my infographics. I would have liked to do a side-by-side comparison of the originals and the finished products, but I was not able to maneuver through the template's formatting.

Furthermore, I cannot confidently say that I am proud of my final infographics. Due to time constraints and topic choices (namely, "Rice Dances" and "Fish Dances"), I am not sure if I was able to do PCE, nor myself, justice.

Website Design

I wanted a clean and simple design for my website; naturally, I chose the template "Classic". I was worried that the black and white theme would come across as dull and mundane, but I find the overall look is quite pleasing. The font choices came with the template. After playing around with a few serif and sans-serif combinations, I fell back to the original because it ultimately went best.

My website has zero background noise, so reduced realism is present. The "Learn More" button on the Home page potentially plays off the Gestalt Principle, Common Fate. When you press the button, your eyes follow the movement to the next part of the page; this signals a relation between the two sections. The general format of the website (i.e., blocking off each section into a black or white box) incorporates another Gestalt Principle, Uniform Connectedness.

However, the design and layout of my website mostly plays with principles of CRAP: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity.

Contrast is seen with the use of colors: a black background is paired with white font, while a white background is paired with black font.

Repetition is seen with colors, as well as with the layout of the website. For example, both the "Simple Infographic" and "Complex Infographic" pages follow the same format: title, subtitle, revised infographic, revision description. Repetition is also seen with the design of these blocks of information: both utilize the same black background and white font theme. Despite its deviations, the Home page also repeats this theme.

Most of the text on this website is right-aligned. The only text that is not is the "My Name is Danielle" on the Home page, which is left-aligned, and the title section of the Portfolio page, which is center-aligned. I like the contrast of the left-aligned text on the Home page as I find that it makes a striking first impression. I would have changed the title section of the Portfolio page to right-aligned text, but I could not figure out how to do so without disrupting the format of the entire page.

Proximity is in the formatting. Most sections follow the following format: title, subtitle (if there is one), and relevant body text. If a "Learn More" or "See More" button is present, then it is located a few inches below the body text.

Information to Consider

As the "Welcome!" blurb states, I made this website with the intention of expanding. Thus, my Information and Design Production Portfolio is its own separate page (as opposed to being the focal point of the website).

While in Wix's Preview Mode, I noticed that after a few moments (perhaps a minute or so), the current page returns to the Home page; if it is already on the Home page, it returns to the top. I am hoping that this is just a feature of the Preview Mode and will not affect the website once it is published.

After a few more collaborations with the coordinators of PCE's folk-dancing team, Kasayahan, my infographics will be up and ready for use. Thus, the "Contact Me" section on the Home page was necessary; if future PCE members had questions about my infographics, they would have a place to contact me for further information.
